A great thermometer at a great price! These thermometers have a 3" Face, a 6" Probe, and a 1/2" MPT on the back. The 6" Probe works great in a Mash Tun, however may be too long for a boil kettle if you use an immersion chiller. Please see our MT512 for the same thermometer with a 2.5" probe.

To use the optional thermometer (MT500), do I need to buy a thermowell (e.g. FE619)?

BEST ANSWER: The thermowell mentioned above does not fit this tank FYI. I believe the FE622 is the correct size thermowell.

Hello Jason - MT514 is designed for equipment with existing 1/2" FPT Bulkheads. We offer WL311 and WL313 Weldless Thermometers with all necessary fittings to install on a kettle. Blichmann also offers BL700 in similar fashion. A step drill is required.

Really Expected More
I bought the 6" probed thermometer and installed it on my kettle, which was a task in itself. First off, the hole which must be bored in the metal kettle is rather large making for a bit more work than should really be necessary. Secondly, the required nuts and washers to attach it are not included and raise the cost (I guess that's why the Blickmann is $10 more expensive). But the most disappointing aspect happened when the probe got bent after being installed. Thereafter the thermometer will not register the correct temperature no matter how much the calibration screw is adjusted. It will neither come within 5 degrees of freezing nor boiling (I tested it at sea level using distilled water). In other words, it is now worthless! I had to buy a different one.

Great Long Probe Thermometer
This is my favorite thermometer for my cooler mash tun - been using it for two years now, and still accurate to within 1 degree. Never had an issue with liquid splashing on it, and never had an issue with the needle sticking.

Good idea - Execution? Be careful
I've had one of these units installed on my mash tun for about a year. I've always been a little uneasy about how accurate the readings were. I finally got around to doing a side-by-side test of all the various thermometers in my kitchen/brewing drawer. I took readings at tap water temperature of 64F and heated to 164F.

Results of the test ended up with the Fermetap thermometer within 1 degree F of the digitals, but only after I tapped it and it jumped 10 degrees! This is probably a concern only with thermometers with an internal mechanism that can hang up. Although the final temperature was close enough, the fact that it hung up concerned me.

The conclusion I can to is that although it is convenient to have the big dial thermometer on the outside of the tun, there is no substitute for a very accurate digital probe in the middle of the mash.

3inch Thermometer
I like to have a analog Thermometer to provide a fail safe mechanical reading - easy to view!
