Description

The Fermaid line of products are a range of nutrients that have been adopted from winemaking and put to use supporting beer fermentations as well.

Fermaid O is a newer formulation of the long trusted Fermaid K nutrient which replaces the inorganic DAP in Fermaid K with an organic source of nitrogen instead. The organic nitrogen in Fermaid O is better for your yeast, and that results in better beer!

Organic Nitrogen is easier for your yeast to digest, resulting in a smoother, more consistent fermentation. Fermaid O fermentations show fewer temperature spikes, which minimizes negative effects that can be caused by heat. Compared to DAP, Fermaid O results in more consistent and complete fermentation, and lower levels of negative sulfur compounds and other off-flavors.

Use at a rate of 1.5g / gal of wort. Dissolve in a small amount of wort or water and add to your fermenter at pitching.

Great, more efficient nutritional source than Fermaid K. You need to pay attention to quantity used, as it's dosed differently than Ferm K.

when is fermaid o introduced into the wine must?
Anthony DAmico on Oct 25, 2021
BEST ANSWER: I add fermaid o to my must once the brix level is approx. 1/3 to 1/2 of its' original brix
The dosage rage is listed as 1.5g/gal of must/juice. The Fermaid O spec sheet lists the dosage rate at 20g/hL (or about .7g/gal). Which one is correct (or better)?
Barry P Landaiche on Apr 11, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Really depends on what you need and what you are fermenting..
Comparing 1gal is quite different than a hL. It's not completely linear when scaling up in size between homebrew vs commercial. Their suggested rates are different, but so is their whole setup.

Regarding your question, depends more on what you are fermenting and how high your gravity. If I'm making a simple wine or cider, I usually add around 1.5g/gal. But I'll use less if I'm using whole fruit, maybe 1.0g/gal when I pitch yeast. I may do another nutrient addition after a couple days if there are signs of a stressed fermentation.

If doing mead or sugar wash, I'd aim for the higher nutes 1.5g/gal.

If you really want to dose appropriate, look up TOSNA. I think the site Meadmaderight has a really easy free calc to help.

Robust Ferment
Used a couple of yeasts that it is claimed need nitrogen. No sulfur no stuck ferment. Seems like the yeast must’ve gotten what it needed.

Best nutrients
Want your brews to ferment as well as possible? Feed your yeast the best nutrients. Fermiad-O in TOSNA3.0 will help you get there.

My only complaint is the bag is not resealable. Otherwise, great product.

First time experience
I just used Fermaid O in a batch of Black Raspberry (which I grow) wine. I had a good but not foamy fermentation. Fermented down to SG 0.992. So, based on this one experience, I can recommend it, as it does it's job. Bigger tests for it as the harvest season approaches... Cheers!
