Description

If you want a quick and easy way to take gravity readings during the brewing process, then a refractometer is the tool for the job. Taking hydrometer readings during the brew tends to be a time-consuming process, and by the time you get a reading it may be too late to react. This is because you need to take a large sample and cool it to get an accurate reading. A refractometer allows you take instant gravity readings, with just one drop, at any point during the boil, or even during the run off of the sparge during an all-grain brew. These 'during the process' readings allow you to add more water or boil longer so you can attain exactly the gravity you desire.

Traditional refractometers without ATC are calibrated to work at 68°F. The ATC function allows you to use the refractometer in an ambient temperature range of 50-86°F (10-30°C). Since your sample is just one drop, and will quickly adjust to the temperature of the refractometer, the temperature of the sample is irrelevant. This unit also comes with a manual calibration knob that is secured with a lock nut. To calibrate place one drop of distilled water on the testing platform and adjust to zero if necessary. The LED light is a handy feature that helps illuminate the sample and make the scale easier to read.

Features:

  • 0-30 Brix scale
  • 0-1.120 Specific Gravity scale
  • Metal body with rubber grip
  • Adjustable focus eyepiece with rubber grip
  • Automatic Temperature Compensation)
  • LED illumination function

Please Note: This tool is used to measure unfermented wort. Once alcohol is present, the use of a correction table is advised.

What is the difference between the mt700 ($59) and this mt708 ($39)?
Shannon McGee on Jan 25, 2020
Dual Scale Refractometer w/ ATC & LED Light
Dual Scale Refractometer w/ ATC & LED Light
Dual Scale Refractomer w/ ATC
Dual Scale Refractomer w/ ATC
BEST ANSWER: CORRECTION: mt700 ($59) does NOT have a light, it has a focus dial which works great for those with glasses. The cheaper mt708 ($39) has the LED light, but my understanding is it does not have a focus dial based on some of the reviewers mentioning they struggle to read the scale with glasses. The mt700 also comes with the dropper and small screwdriver for adjustments.

Accurate
Very easy to use and matched my hydrometer out of the box. If only morebeer would tell us the pre-boil gravity of their kits!

Best investment I have ever made
With the proper correction calculator this works great. Scale is a little hard to read with old eyes, but much easier that my hydrometer.

Start with this. Don't buy it later
If you care about beer, get this first, get it with your first order. it is so much easier than a regular hygrometer to use, and it can get used all the time. I use it to measure the gravity out of the sparge to make sure I get every last sugar molecule out of my grain, and I use it to make sure my OG target is on when we pitch, and I use it to figure out what is wrong with my fermentation when it gets stuck. It's such a marvelous and easy to use tool! I don't even use the built in light. I have a clear sky window to look at. I also check the FG of every beer I like to check and see how they finish. Tip: fill the entire sample space to get a good clear reading. When checking fully fermented beer with CO2 bubbles, slosh the beer well and let stand before reading to get the best accuracy.

These things are great for getting a read at boil
Needing to know your SG or Brix with a hot boil. This tool is perfect to let you know if you need more sugars or dilution while boiling. The LED light is great for always keeping the viewing area lit up.

It’s okay. Needs quality control.
I like it. Just make sure to calibrate it with distilled water.

It works good for the initial OG testing with hot wort. (No need to cool the wort prior to testing it).

But use a hygrometer first your FG. (Final gravity).

I knocked-off a few stars because the light literally fell out the second time I used it. It has no light now...which sucks for what you pay for it.

Didn’t want the hassle of calling and doing the whole return thing. Poor quality control.
