Rodger Davis former brewer of Drakes Brewing Co., San Leandro, California.

Another brewer that got his start at home - Rodger has been a homebrewer since 1991, and a commercial brewer since 1996. After taking the Eight - week course at Siebel, Rodger was brewing at a few places in the Bay Area until he settled down at Drakes in 2002. Since then he has been keeping the awards and praises rolling into Drakes with their flagship IPA, which took Gold in 2002 at the Great American Beer Festival. Drakes Brewing has been around since 1989, and is one of the San Francisco Bay Area's oldest breweries. Their attention to detail and their commitment to making great beer is evident in each batch that rolls out of the brewery. Definitely another 'must' for any beer fan visiting the Bay Area. Until then, find out more about Drake's at

One of the best examples of a West Coast IPA that you can find on the market. It has a clean, crisp malt character backed by tons of hops - 6 additions in all! Somehow, the hops aren't too over the top and don't squash the malt as one might think from just looking at the recipe. This IPA is one that we have been asked to clone over the years, and we are excited to offer it straight from the brewers log book. Not over the top like some IPA's can be, Drakes is one beer to search for. Rodger recommends using White Labs California Yeast, WLP001.

Excellent Brew
This is a hit. The description is on the money. Smooth with nice citrus aromas and a good hoppy flavor without being bitter. Great feedback from friends. If you are comparing a Drake's IPA side by side, the kit is darker in color, with the flavor and aroma qualities very similar. I used the White Labs California yeast pitched direct, and dry hopped for 5 days in the primary starting at near the end of fermentation. Final gravity came out at 1.016. I had expected it to be lower, maybe a yeast starter next time?

A house favorite for all seasons
I cannot keep this beer in my stores - once it is ready to drink, it goes quick! Very rich and smooth and not over the top bitter. I've had it winter, spring and summer, so now it's time for my fall batch.

Great beer!
I jumped on the MoreBeer webpage to order another kit, maybe two, but decided to add a review first. I have had it bottled for 3 weeks, and the plan was to let it sit another week, break it out when the kids are here for Christmas. But, I wanted a sample, so I chilled one bottle just to satisfy my curiosity. It was absolutely a pleasure to drink. I do not belief you'll regret trying this kit! Now....back to my ordering!

Great recipe, will absolutely make this again.
High on the alcohol and hoppiness, but this turned out a great beer. If you are a true hop-head you could dry hop a bit longer than the recipe calls for, but for me 7 days of hops in the secondary was perfect.

Good IPA
I like this IPA pretty well but I am not on the "best IPA EVER" train. Its preference though I guess. Its a good recipe and the beer comes out nice.

Awesome Beer
Great beer, hard to mess up... One of the best beers I've made to date. Going to be a House regular from now on. Not to overpowering with hops... Nice smooth taste.

Goldilocks Favorite IPA!
This was the first beer I brewed after a 20 year break, and I have made 10 five gallon batches since last April. The description is right on. Drakes is a great West Coast style IPA with a great balance of hops and malt. I am not surprised that every review so far is 5 star.

A staple in our IPA stable
In a never-ending search of a satisfying IPA, Drake's is a kit we return to time and again. It's one of the more clean, fresh tasting, and complex thirst quenching beers we brew. An alcohol content with purpose but not over the top. If you like IPAs - you'll love Drake's. Thank you San Leandro.
