Description

1.5 - 1.8 °L - Crisp Malt - Crisp No. 19 Maris Otter Malt (formerly Gleneagles Maris Otter) is an heirloom varietal that is World renowned for its deep, rich flavor.  It is considered Heirloom because it is an old variety with a very low yield of 1.5-2 tons per acre.  Modern varietals now produce up to 4 tons per acre.  Why do farmers grow Maris Otter when new high-yield, disease resistant varietals are available? Because Craft Brewers around the World are willing to pay a premium for the complex, authentic pub flavor that Maris Otter provides.

Please note this is the distinguished Glen Eagles version of Crisp Maris Otter. Crisp produces two types of the Maris Otter malt. A regular version malted in modern silos and this exclusive Glen Eagles version of their Maris Otter that is floor malted by hand in the traditional way. This malt is obviously great for all English style Ales but is perfectly suited for any beer where you want a rich, bready malt flavor.

1.5 - 1.8 ° L

What is and how to configure Diastic power for 5 lbs 1.5 L Crisp Maris otter malt ? What is the formula for figuring out Diastic power for malts. Most just show 1.8L
Rick G on Apr 22, 2023
BEST ANSWER: The “L” is for lovibond, a measure of a beer’s color. Diastatic power is something else altogether; basically how much sugar are you gonna get out of it.

Been using Crisp Maris Otter for over 25 years. I use it in all my beers from pale ales/session IPAs to stouts and browns. Best malt in the world

The finest base malt
This malt is as good as it gets in my opinion. It’s the base malt for 90% of my beers. It’s well worth the extra coin it costs. I confess to not having tried 2 row, when you find a malt that you like this well, why change?

Tasty, Lighter Color Than Expected
This is a wonderful malt. I used five pounds with two pounds of 2-row to ensure adequate diastatic power. It came out delicious, with a light blonde color and a light crisp flavor that all have enjoyed. Still, I was expecting a darker color, say something like Smith's Pale Ale, but it is a light golden straw color. I suppose 2 ounces of crystal 120 L will do the trick.

Don't bother getting the pre-milled
I liked the grain (and will but again due to price and shipping speed), but do not pay extra for milling. 3 of us students in a college Brewing and Fermentation program used different grains for our Capstone beer projects- we caught it in one instance, but the other two used the grains as is. Their efficiency dropped to the low 70s, whereas mine, which we re-milled in class, was 87%. Long story: MILL YOUR OWN.

Delicious
Excellent milling characteristics, soft uniform plumps, and a nice, slightly sweet mild biscuit flavor make this a great base malt for any continental-style beer.

Like the flavor, but efficiency is so-so
I've used this stuff in a few different batches. The flavor is really nice. It gives a nice, grainy, subtly sweet flavor that I really enjoy. The main drawback I've noticed is that I doesn't seem to convert as efficiently as other base malts I've used. Using my typical crush and typical mash process, I was losing about 5% or so in mash efficiency. What I've found is that I need to crush it a little more finely and I need to make sure I'm doing a full 60 min, or even 90 min mash to get the most conversion out of it.
