Columbus IPA | 5 Gallon Beer Recipe Kit | Extract

Columbus IPA | 5 Gallon Beer Recipe Kit | Extract

Please select from the following option(s) to see pricing and availability.

  • An incredibly aromatic IPA celebrating the delightfully earthy/citrusy Columbus hop (aka CTZ or Columbus/Tomahawk/Zeus)
  • Includes 100% Columbus hops
  • Estimated ABV: 6%
  • Estimated IBUs: 62-66
  • Makes 5 gallons of finished beer

An IPA recipe that features the high oil content Columbus hop in the finish. Lots and lots of aroma combined with very evident hop flavor.  The Columbus hop flavor and aroma help work to soften the apparent bitterness. The malt extract and grain remains the same as the American IPA recipe.

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity:1.058-64
  • SRM (Color Range): 6-10
  • IBUs: 62-66
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 6%

Our recipe kits DO NOT include grain bags, yeast or priming sugar. To find our yeast recommendations, choose your preferred kit option above and then select the drop-down menu under “Yeast Options”.  For more info, click on the recommended yeast(s) below in the “You Might Also Need” section below. All included steeping grains will come milled.
Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

I haven't done extract brewing in a while. How much DME should I use for a 5 Gal batch?
Torres on Jan 26, 2021
BEST ANSWER: It will vary with your target ABV or gravity. This particular 5 gallon Columbus IPA kit uses 7lbs of light DME and comes out to around 6% with an og of 1.058-1.062. It is very easy to measure DME to fine tune your wort to the exact gravity you want.

Also a few pounds of DME is great to have on hand in case you want to up the ABV of a beer or you come up a little short on a high gravity barley wine or imperial stout.

My Elder brew is still in bottles and the Columbus was my second attempt at brewing beer. Opened bottles of Columbus the other day and it tastes freaking amazing and alcohol content was accurate. Two more purchases will be coming soon. The Columbus batch got me 42 bottles of beer,

Right Kit at the Right Time
I purchased this kit for the soul purpose of making a batch of Pliny the Elder. I have the other hops but was low on Columbus and to do a 5 gallon batch I will need to push the volume in the fermenter. With not quite enough mash tun space for this, I can use some of the extract to help me boost the OG where it needs to be.

Easy Beer Kit
Friend and I used to do all-grain brewing, and decided to go the extract route this time. The kit had everything you need (except for yeast) to get your beer going... everything packaged neatly and nicely, and came within two days. Would recommend this kit to anyone looking to get into making beer with extract.

Ale's don't get much better
I've been brewing for a few decades experimenting with different combinations of malts, hops and yeasts. Fresh Columbus Hops serve as well as any hop I've tried for a bitter, flavor, or aroma hop at any price. This kit resembles on of my recipes. I add an extra 4oz of Columbus hops for flavor and aroma to this recipe. I use White Labs California Ale Yeast.
