Why did I pic this ?? This will be the 4th & 5th time I've ordered this, and it ain't because I like the picture of Jamil kicked back on the picture (lol). This is in my humble opinion what a very good Porter should be, flavorful, fullbodied but not an overly heavy syrip like consistancy. It is just a smooth wonderful beer that is proving to be very hard to keep in the bottle !

This recipe is delicious. When I made it, I used half of the included hazelnut flavoring and an equal volume of peanut flavoring and it was great! Would definitely recommend.

This is a really complex recipe (that I've done before). It's easier if you all put it together!

I've recently become obsessed with chocolate PB porters. I will likely add PB extract instead of the hazelnut.

What is the total amount of grains for the recipe?
Joey Chenault on Dec 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: For the all-grain version (5-gallon), 10 lbs 2-row malt, 1 lb Munich, 1 lb Crystal 40L, 1 lb Crystal 75L, 12 oz chocolate malt, 8 oz carapils, 8 oz black patent, for a total weight of 14.75 lbs malt.
For the all grain version, do you mash with all of the grain or do you steep the specialty grains first, then disgaurd, like in the extract recipe?
Christopher K on Jan 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: All at once. You want to extract all of the starch to convert it to sugar. Keep at it. You will love all grain so much more than extract. It’s intimidating at first, but becomes really easy
Are the cacao nibs sterile or do I need to mix them with vodka or something before adding to the secondary ?

not everyone will like the hazelnut
So i quite like the chocolate porter part, but I agree with one commenter that the hazelnut flavoring can be too much. It could be that some people are 'supersmellers' for that scent and what I get are very strong notes of smelly feet. Since the hazelnut flavoring goes in at the time of bottling, maybe consider prepping a couple of test bottles first (as I did) to make sure you're going to like it.

Great Beer! Don't fear the Hazelnut Give it TIME
Finally managed to brew this when it went on sale. Brewday went great, my OG was a little low but still ended up with a 6% beer. I toasted the cocoa nibs in the oven before adding to a hop tube and into the fermenter for 2 weeks. I was so tempted to add more adjuncts but left it alone this first time.

A bunch of reviews said the hazelnut was over the top so I started with 1/3 bottle and I had people blind taste it. Most just thought it was a chocolate porter, which was still delicious but I wanted the full experience and added the rest of the hazelnut.

I'd agree that at first the hazelnut was a bit offensive, very strong on the palette but if you can be patient the beer is now about 4 weeks in the keg and the flavors have mellowed out so well, people love this beer!

So do what you want but I'd suggest if you really do want the hazelnut put it all in and just be aware the flavors will balance out in a month or so.

Other than that this was my first porter and I do miss the added body a stout provides. I'd really like to try this with oats and/or lactose to bring more body to the beer as well as coffee. Cheers!

Not happy
Way too complicated. 6-8 bags of grain, 3 different hops, other assorted additives. Zero directions.
Returned all. Costing $31 shipping. Bad experience!

My First Jamil Grain Kit, "Chocolate Hazelnut Porter"
1st of all I'll be doing this again !! What a tasty brew, I pretty much hit all the numbers during the brew. It's a pure pleasure to drink, it's been bottled for 2 weeks as of today , I plan to age it longer.. I added a 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon to the boil just because it stuck me to do so. I would also grind the chocolate bits a little finer and put them in a hop bag for better 2nd fermenter absorption of chocolate. Lastly, definitely go light on the hazelnut extract, try 1/3 bottle then add to taste it's strong.

Really Tasty!
This was incredibly tasty. I did the all-grain kit with the recommended dry yeast. I missed my OG on the low side at 1.58 but, it was my first time with my Brewzilla. I've since acquired a refractory to continue the mash/boil as necessary to hit OG. It's under gas now but, was darn tasty at 4 weeks. It wasn't fully fermented at 1 week or 2 weeks. A little shake of the fermenter and walla!

Holy Hazelnut
Definitely go easy on the chestnut flavoring. I used 1/2 bottle and after months of conditioning in the keg, the flavor is still in your face. It’s a good Porter recipe but I believe the chestnut should be subtle for a balanced beer.

Solid bier, after a few weeks. (YMMV)
Solid dark beer. The hazelnut scent and taste is strong for the first 1.5 weeks. Let it sit for a while (if you can), and it will mellow out.

I only add 3/4 of the hazelnut. I also reduce the initial 60-minute hops a smidgen, to cut down a on the hop bitterness.

I ferment two weeks, then place in secondary (with cacao nibs) for another two weeks.

Force carbonate @ 35psi for two days, then decompress and add bier gas (75nitro/25CO2) afterwards for 2 days.

Nitro bier rocks!

Chocolate Porter
Turned out great, I tasted it while kegging and decided to leave out the hazelnut. Put on CO2 / Nitro Blend, and it's excellent.

Best Recipe to date
I have brewed this multiple times and its always a hit. Just go easy on the hazelnut flavoring. Start with a small amount and work your way up to taste
