Description

  • 304 stainless steel splash resistant construction
  • Industrial design using commercial quality components for long life and easy serviceability
  • On/Off thermostat control
  • Outlet fully disconnected when powered off for added safety, unlike some one-leg designs
  • Wall mount bracket allows you to get the controller off the table and out of the way

Keep your temps tight with the BrewBuilt™ HLT Controller! Perfect for keeping your sparge water or mash water at your set temperature—it allows you to control the current of a 208-240V heating element up to 30 amps. Features industrial-style power switches, and a 1/6 DIN Controller mounted on a splash resistant stainless steel enclosure. Pre-cut mounting holes allow you to hang the controller on your brew stand on the wall at eye-level. We highly recommend mounting the controller so you don't have to worry about keeping an area of your table dry where you might lay it down. L6-30 connections with 4 ft. cords on either end. Compatible with all 208-240V elements 30 amps and lower. While L6-30 are the most common elements available, yours may need an adapter. Uses a 9' stainless braided PT-100 temperature sensor.

The HLT Controller includes a contactor to fully shut off both legs when you throw the power switch, making the free end of the cord safer when the element is not plugged in.

If you'd prefer not to mount the controller to your wall, consider the stainless steel Controller Stand.

**Caution: In order to avoid injury or death we strongly recommend using a GFCI in any circuit used near water. You can find one here.**

What's the OD of the probe and the wire length for it (from controller to end of probe)? Can you do a step mash with this controller?
Adam Goldberg on Mar 23, 2021
BEST ANSWER: You can do a step mash with this controller as long as you manually change the set point for each step. There is no way to program multiple temperatures on a time table.
Can this be programmed for HERMS/RIMS offsets??
Adam Goldberg on Mar 22, 2021
BEST ANSWER: The controller can be set to any temperature that you need. It will take some time and observation to understand what differential you will need. This is designed to take the temperature from just one place and control one heating element. The simplest way is to set your hot liquor tank at whatever temperature you need to make the output of your herms/pump loop equal to 160 degrees (so as not to denature your enzymes). Alternatively you can take the temperature at the output of your HERMS coil and it will control the hot liquor tank heating element; this manner is less direct in terms of control and could lead to wider temperature swings and may be harder to deal with.

Good, but could be great
Due to my HLT setup, and the temperature probe being short and small OD, I had to replace it. I needed to remove the sensor included and install a QD connection (from another source) that also allowed me to use an 8' line to go to the sensor (12' version is available too). This then went to a 1.5" TC PT100 sensor into my Spike+ HLT. I was going to try and use the included sensor, but it would have protruded a fraction of an inch into the HLT once I put it into a fitting. IMO, useless.

Luckily, the QD connection item I purchased went directly into the hole used by the included sensor. So no drilling was needed. As mentioned, my new sensor connection has a longer cable length, giving me more options for later. Granted, I'll be limited by the 4' power cord length to the element.

I would advise going to a standard RTD quick connection at the panel so that customers can then get the senor they want without issue. Plus without needing to remove the (IMO) useless sensor provided. I suppose I could have dropped the sensor through the lip of the HLT, but that didn't seem wise.

Response from MoreFlavor
Hi Adam! We are sorry the BE531 Hot Liquor controller was shipped with the stock sensor. It is our procedure to swap it with a 9 foot long PT100 probe that is designed for a thermowell. If you contact customer service they will send you a replacement probe (part number ELC501P) at no cost. Our number is 800-600-0033, or you can email in at info@moreflavor.com. Cheers!
