Description

If you prefer a hoppy beer, you’re likely concerned with keeping the hops in your boil kettle and out of your fermenter during your home brewing. The Blichmann Hop Blocker is a handy brewing accessory that promises to keep those hops out of the fermenter and securely in the boil kettle, all without disrupting the rest of the brewing process.

Through rigorous and repetitive testing, Blichmann Engineering has determined that the 90 percent to 95 percent of the hop material is left behind when using the Blichmann Hop Blocker to transfer your brew to the fermenter. While many traditional screen filters draw from the bottom of the kettle and often plug the screen, the Hop Blocker drains the majority of the wort from the top down, enabling the hops and trub to settle undisturbed at the bottom of the kettle. The filter works on just a small portion of the wort instead of the entire thing, making it much less disruptive.

The Blichmann Hop Blocker is designed for use with pellet hops only, not with whole, loose hops, as those could clog the Hop Blocker.

Works for me
My 10 gallon IPA recipe has almost a pound of hops added from 15 minutes through whirlpool. I have no problem whirlpooling for 30 minutes and letting it settle for 20-30 minutes. There is a nice hop cone from the whirlpool and the hop blocker definitely blocks significantly more for me than just letting things settle. I've never had it clog but I don't rush it into the fermenter so dial back your pump. I'm getting very clear wort and finished beer. I use the Blichmann kettle and hop rocket as well. Believe it or not this pic is wort clarity going into the fermenter. http://oi63.tinypic.com/24v8ymf.jpg

Does it's job
It keeps out most of the junk. Will clog and it's not always accessible to clean.

Well-made, but poorly designed
The build on this is solid and attractive, but it clogs very easily and I suspect is not allowing enough circulation for full hopping of the brew.

What's the trick?
Filter - 5 stars, doesn't clog and filters really well

Usability - 2 stars. You can't whirlpool with it in a small kettle. I use a 10 gallon kettle and i haven't figured out a good way to get it going yet. Without a whirlpool this thing loses a ton of wer to the trub

works great for counterflow chiller
I made my own counter-flow chiller (from J. Palmer's "How To Brew") with 1/4" copper refrigerator water line tubing and a heavy duty garden hose and a little 1/2" copper tubing (for the ends). The leaf hops filter the hot break from going into the fermenter, and the hop blocker does a great job of blocking the junk. I made a Pilsner with a pound of Saaz (14 gal. batch) and the hot break stayed with the leaves. I would not think it would work so good with pellets. And I use the 20 gal. Blich Boilermaker. So... ya gotta have a dip tube to use it.

What am I doing wrong?
I have not had good luck with the hopblocker. Every time I use it I lose at least 1 gallon of wort. I have tried locating it off to the side close to the kettle side and in the center of the kettle. I believe its presents in the kettle prohibits a good whirlpool effect. I always let the wort settle for at least 20 minutes.
It always plugs up and is always covered with hops, I don't use leaf hops.
Before hopblocker, with just a siphon tube, I was able to whirlpool and only lost maybe a quart of wort. I think I wasted $60.

Disappointed
It kind of works, but it's a hassle. You need a way to raise the level, you better not tip it, you have to whirlpool and make sure not to bump it. I find it easier to just use a mesh hops bag.

Works with modifications
I believe the Blichmann hopblocker was designed to work with Blichmann kettles. I found it necessary to design a siphon tube for my kettle. After doing so it worked great. Would recommend this product to any home brewer that likes to design/build.
