Turn your kettle into a Heat Exchanged Recirculation Mash System with the HERMS coil from Blichmann Engineering. Comes in two sizes, small for 7.5 to 10 gallon kettles, and large for 15 to 55 gallon kettles. Installation instructions can be found below under "Documents".

I chose this to help maintain an even temperature gradient in the mash. I use a cooler and had to pour into a pitcher and pour back in in order to keep a constant mash temp.

Considering using this for chilling by installing into an electric boil kettle. One kettle for biab mash and boil, chiller sanitized by boil. Disconnect power, connect coolant. No need to remove if cleaned right away. Anyone see problems with this setup?

BEST ANSWER: I’m using the large coil in my 15 gal HLT with whirlpool circulation. With this setup I have about 1.5 deg F loss HLT to Mash Tun so it is efficient and should work fine for cooling. I mounted the coil per Blichmann instruction and it takes 13 gal in the HLT to completely cover the coil. You may want to double check mounting location in your kettle to see how much will be covered on your typical batch and if there is space for you brew bag. If you have the ability to whirlpool it will help with the rate of cooling. The bulkhead connections and quality of this coil are top notch and I had a couple question and the Blichmann folks were quick to reply and very helpful so may be worth talking to them. Good luck in your design!
Does anyone know, can you use regular 1/2" npt fittings on this instead of the quick connect elbows it comes with?

BEST ANSWER: Correct, for my HERMS I drilled holes in the kettle, fastened it to the kettle with a nut and washers, and mounted ball valves to the threads.
Will this fit in the Anvil Foundry 6.5? I am planning to use the smaller Foundry unit as an HLT for a small HERMS setup. I want to run one port through the valve port of the Foundry and then attach a qd to the other end to recirculate back to the mash tun.

BEST ANSWER: No it won't. The internal diameter of the foundry is 12.5 inches. The small coil is 12.3 inches. I don believe there wojkd be enough room to install it. There is a website that a guy makes coils and may have one that fits or could make one to fit. Sorry don't remember the name of the site.

Its been great . Needed a step bit to drill pot. Easy install after rhat. Two brews and the herms is less hassle and sits lower in the tank. Easy to clean in place too

Blichmann HERMS Coil
Even thou it was a small batch for the first usage it work great.
The tap water was a little warm (71 f) but still it did great.

Perfect little coil for a 10 gal HLT.
I haven't finished building my electric HLT yet but I purchased this HERMS coil to maintain temperatures in my mash tun. With 29 years experience home brewing and building home brew equipment, I have no doubt this is the correct coil to achieve adequate temp control. I am in the process of converting to all electric equipment and a complete new system. This coil is an important piece to complete the build.

Stepping up my brew game.
So I haven’t actually used this to brew yet. Did a wet run with just water. I know it’s going to step my brewing game up though. I bought the large coil and installed it on a homemade keggle. The ribs on the keg were just barely outside the measurements for drilling holes for installation which meant I had to bend and wiggle it a little in order to get the washers to seat correctly. Which reminds me... I installed the washers from the inside. Two schools of thought on that but my logic was, fire on the outside, washer on the inside. It works.

It does the thing
I went back and forth on whether to try to make my own with bulk tubing and compression bulkhead fittings but I ultimately decided that this was the most cost/time-effective solution available. It installed easily, the fittings are high quality and it's plenty large enough to step mash on 10 gallon batches. I'm glad I didn't mess around with trying to build my own because I probably would have wasted $200 and 8 hours of my life by the time I was done.

Quality product
Installation was simple but had to add washers and gadgets to the installation that where not included. Four stars is because nut that fastens to outside of pot should be larger or include a washer with hardware for instalation.
