Description

The Blichmann AutoSparge is extremely helpful when sparging or recirculating your mash. Designed to regulate the flow of liquid being allowed onto the top of your grain bed. If the floating ball is all the way down, the flow rate will increase. As the ball begins to rise with the liquid level, the flow rate slows down, preventing an overflow. Simple, yet effective! Requires at least a 12" inner diameter kettle, keg, or cooler. Includes 18" of silicone tubing and foam tubing float ring.

Installation requires a 13/16" mounting hole. Max 10 psi; cannot accommodate city/well water pressure.

I own both the mash tun and the vorlauf arm, and use both. a couple comments/answers:

--if you want to use the vorlauf arm, you also need to get the special brewtech bulkhead fitting, see:

the thick wall of the insulated mash tun makes a normal bulkhead fitting unusable.
this fitting is super-easy to install -- the tun is already drilled for it.
And then, with the bulkhead fitting in place installing/removing the arm is a 5-sec job -- the arm just slips in and you hand-tighten the knurled nut.

--the blichmann autosparge arm look pretty cool (I do not have that) but it would take some adaptation...
looking at the photo I do not think it's bulkhead fitting is long enough for the wall of the SS tun....
so I guess you would need figure out a work-around.
Frankly, I like the idea of this auto-adjustable rate sparge, but I see a couple problems:
first, my grain bed (for 15-20 gal batches) is usually high enough in the tun that I don't think it would work;
and second I would not want it to always be hanging there (like when cleaning, filling the tun w/grain, etc.) and it doesn't look like it's easy to remove -- you'd have to disassemble every time?

--personally, (I know it's not automatic...) I bought the SS sparge arm, and used it a couple times, but have wound up usually using the SS re-circulation manifold, see:

which can be made to connect/disconnect to that same vorlauf arm bulkhead with a short length of hose and this fitting:

I had to drill and install my vourlaf assembly-SS brew tech seems the appropriate hole cutting bits (they work much better than a step drill) for this installation. I don't think MoreBeer does this-it's probably better for you to look at everything and decide where you want to drill according to how you have things set up anyway.

Provides Nice MT level control

This device does exactly what it says it will do. If you are fly sparging or just recirculating your mash you no longer have to monitor levels or rates from one vessel to the next. Once you set the float level it will add just enough liquid in a throttling fashion. It is very nice.

Great Concept & Nice Accessory

I have two of these now and they work great. One issue is adjusting the level if necessary once the (very) hot liquid is flowing as it will pour onto your fingers. You need to select & set the desired/envisioned level as best possible to start with particularly with small (5 gal or less) batches to facilitate effective/efficient wort recirculation or sparging. Secondly, I personally think it would be a benefit to have more teeth on the adjustment gears in order to provide a greater range of float setting heights. Otherwise, great concept and I'll continue to use them. Cheers!

I dig it!

Good quality. Easy to install and operate. Just be careful. First time I used it I was too busy playing around with it and not paying attention and ended up spargiing way too fast. lol...

Incomplete Package

I wouldn't bother unless you're going to shell out for the extra rod lengths also. These should really be included. I bought it not knowing if the rod it comes with would be long enough. Guess what - it wasn't. I still don't know which one I need, so I'll end up buying both of the extensions.
It's also not great that the valve can't handle a bit more pressure than it does without leaking.
But it seems like when I have enough parts and get things adjusted it will do a fine job.

Good product. A couple of areas of concern.

The auto- sparge works as described. I wish you could order it with the specific length sparge arm that you needed. Better yet, have adjustment for the length (ie clap on extendable float arm). The arm it came with was too long for my FF 5 gal batch mash tun cooler. Secondly, it would be nice to have something to support the auto sparge in the wall of the cooler. There is a fair amount of movement at the point of attachment. The FF cooler has a thin inner wall. This may lead to failure of the wall of the mash tun with time.
