Description

A clarifier that has received attention on The Brewing Network and is used by several of our commercial brewer friends. While beers cloud for different reasons and there is not one silver bullet to clear all beers, Biofine has proven effective in most situations. It is an easy way to help ensure clarity without having to filter.

Biofine strips out all remaining yeast in 24-48 hours! Speeds up the aging and clarify process by 2-3 weeks! You'll find a layer of darker yeast that settles on top of your yeast bed in your fermenter. This layer is thicker than normal and acts as a blanket. This settling process avoids your yeast from being disturbed as you move your carboy. Biofine brings out maltiness and accentuates esters produced by yeast.

Biofine Clear is a purified colloidal solution of silicic acid (SiO2) in water that has been specially formulated for the rapid sedimentation of yeast and other haze forming particles in beer. (Vegan friendly - no animal products) Shelf life is 24 months from date of manufacture, unopened.

Dosage Rates: 1/4 Tbsp (3 ml or 1/10oz) to as much as 2 Tbsp (31 ml or 1 fluid oz.) per 5 gallon batch of beer.

Store in cool, dry conditions above 41 degrees F and do not allow the product to freeze.

Some beer styles don't react with certain dose rates. You may have to add more to have an effect. We recommend starting small and increasing your dosage rates once per day until clarification takes place.

I have 10gal in the conical right now going through some maturation. I'm doing a natural carbonation with the fermenter all closed up; sitting at about 18psi at 72F. I'd like to use this product, but am wondering if I already goofed up by starting the carbonation process without the biofine in the fermenter. I usually do a pressurized transfer to keg so am now wondering when and where I might get an opportunity to add biofine. Any thoughts for this batch? And for future batches, what's the ideal time to add biofine and under what conditions. thanks!
Brian M on Jul 10, 2021
BEST ANSWER: You don’t want to use biofine clear on a naturally carbonated beer since it will drop all the yeast out of suspension, so there won’t be enough left to naturally carbonate it. If you are doing forced carbonation with a CO2 tank, then you should have cold crashed it first, add biofine, wait a few days, transfer off of the sediment while still cold, then carbonate. If you add biofine when the beer is at room temperature, it won’t drop the haze causing particles, they will still show up when you chill it.
If I add this to my 5 gal keg of beer, will it create sediment in the keg? And if so, do I need to worry that my dip tube will pick up that sediment?
Thomas Brown on Feb 23, 2024
BEST ANSWER: Yes it will add sediment, it is a fining agent and will drop most impurities to the bottom of the keg, it is better added to the fermenter and let it sit for a few days. The good news is, if you add it to your keg, the first pour will be murky, but the rest is the beer should be nice and clear once you pull all the sediment out, time and cold temps are your friends on this one. And remember relax, don't worry, have another homebrew.
Can I use this and bottle condition?
Ryan R on Aug 25, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can. Usage will depend on your bottling process. I assume a 5-gallon batch, and that you have three steps: primary fermentation, then secondary fermentation in a different container with an airlock, then bottle the beer. In this case, you need a clean container that can hold the entire 5-gallon batch, prior to bottling. First, put 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of Biofine in the bottom of the clean container. Next, transfer your beer from the secondary fermenter into the clean container. Add your corn sugar for carbonation, and bottle. Please note that Biofine will cause significantly more solids to collect at the bottom of the bottles than when you do not use it. Therefore, you might want to put an airlock on the beer that contains the Biofine after the secondary fermenter and let it sit for an extra week to let the solids precipitate to the bottom. Then bottle. This will allow you will to enjoy the clarity that Biofine enables even more, with less mess in the bottles.

If you go straight from primary to bottle, then skip the secondary fermenter, add the Biofine to the clean container, and so on.
What's the shelf life, and how lagged is the typical date of manufacture from one to date of shipment? E.g. 6 months, 3 months?

Biofine Clear Clarifier - 1 kg
BEST ANSWER: Never bought 1 kg from more beer.Only my local HBS twice in the last 3 years. 1kg was over a year by best by date still work but it start to crystallize 2nd bottle was only one month out.He told me the Portland company was getting out of supply homebrew shops. So maybe you got old stock.

Works well but may need to experiment to find a good dose. I hear it drops most gluten as well, so there's that. Easy to use

Perfectly clear beers
Use from 1/2 tsp to 2 tsp in a 5 gallon batch when kegging. I secondary in a keg and add the Biofine when racking from the primary fermenter. Give it two weeks or longer, and then transfer perfectly clear beer to the serving key and carbonate it.

Works really well, clarified my Helles in two days using the smallest recommended dose (3ml). More expensive than gelatin, but its a great product.
