Description

  • This golden hued brew is unbelievably smooth for a beer with an ABV upwards of 7%!
  • Includes Perle and Czech Saaz hops
  • Estimated ABV: 7.5%
  • Estimated IBUs: 18-25
  • Makes 5 gallons of finished beer

Liquid Gold! So smooth for a beer with an alcohol by weight of 7%! This recipe includes quality sugar, plus an immense amount of both dried and liquid Light Malt Extract, hops and uses the Trappist yeast strain. It leaves lots of classic phenolic flavor, but produces a very soft body without a high alcohol bite. Not that bitter, this golden beer is about a strong and complex malt body. It may take a goblet or two to grow on you, but once you acquire the taste.... some would say "beervana." The malt extract for this kit is made entirely from German Pilsner Malt, giving it that classic European flavor.

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity:1.074-78
  • SRM (Color Range): 5-6
  • IBUs: 18-25
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 7.5%

Our recipe kits DO NOT include grain bags, yeast or priming sugar. To find our yeast recommendations, choose your preferred kit option above and then select the drop-down menu under “Yeast Options”.  For more info, click on the recommended yeast(s) below in the “You Might Also Need” section below. All included steeping grains will come milled.

Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

Do you have to make a yeast starter?
Ariel F. on Mar 3, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi Ari - You do not have to, but we always recommend to make a yeast starter to aim for a higher cell count.
Did you add any more yeast when bottling to bottle condition? If so, what yeast?
Ariel F. on Mar 14, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Ari - Lallemand produces a specific bottling yeast or you could simply add more priming sugar.
Lallemand | LalBrew® CBC-1 Cask & Bottle Conditioning Yeast | 11 g

Did you use special champagne or Belgian bottles for bottling? Can normal bottles handle the amount of carbonation?
Ariel F. on Mar 14, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Normal beer bottles can handle the amount of carbonation you want in your belgian beer. If you're carbonating beyond the tolerance of a standard bottle the beer will foam and pour itself out when you open the bottle. Champagne and Belgian corked bottles are a great finish and wonderful for aging beers. It is mostly cosmetic in this case.

Not certain yet.
I’m confident this will turn out to my liking. I’ve not rated a product from MoreBeer yet as it seems they always ask during the time the batch is still either fermenting, in a secondary or conditioning. That said, I’ve not had a batch turn out poorly so am confident this one will be as good as the others. First time with the Belgian so looking forward to it.

Easy to brew and tastes great!
I don't know why D. Heinz had trouble with his batch. I even added an extra pound of Pilsen Light DME, which kicked my O.G. up to 1.090, and it eventually fermented down to 1.014 after 4 weeks in primary, for a whopping ABV of 9.98. And that's with a single packet of Safbrew BE-256 yeast. Color was a little more golden than a typical tripel, but I don't care too much about what my beers look like as long as they taste good. This one had a little residual sweetness to it, which I also like. Not the "perfect" tripel perhaps, but very easy to make and mighty tasty!

Terrible
A friend of mine received this as a gift. He passed it on to me because he decided to stop homebrewing. I brew all grain, but decided I needed to brew this kit just to tell him I did. This kit contains LME and DME. The color of the LME is dark (20-25 SRM). There is no way given the laws of physics that you could add that LME and end up with a color that is anywhere near that of a tripel (around 5 SRM). That is the first problem. The rest: I used a yeast starter, pitched and got this down to 1.023. I've never had a stuck fermentation. So, I created another starter and pitched. Nothing. I did 2 more starters and pitched. Nothing. At this point, I knew this was a dud, but there was the specter of my friend in the background. He's going to want to try this terrible beer. And I told him, "Listen, maybe on the best of days we could call this a dubbel. But even then, to call this a dubbel, we'll need to get it down to 1.018 -- it's just too sweet as it is. But there's no way to do that." But, I'm a good friend, so I kegged it, carbed it and bottled it yesterday (for him). I tried it just to quench my curiosity: it tasted like a terrible soda. You can tell from the photo that it's not anywhere near the color of a tripel. And maybe someone at MB had a dozen too many the day they were packing kits and slipped in the paper that said it was a tripel kit when it really was a dubbel kit. (Though, that still doesn't explain why it wouldn't ferment down unless it was ancient). Anyway, if you're new to brewing and you want to brew yourself a tripel, forget this kit. You'll never get ANYWHERE near it because the LME is the wrong color to provide you anything near the standard tripel...

One of my favorites!
This was my first home brew & still is one of my favorite brews. I've made it several times over the years & both my wife & I treat it like gold rationing it as it gets near the end of our supply. I like to leave it in the secondary for a month or more to let the true ester flavors develop. I've also held back the second hops addition & used it to dry hop it which turned out amazingly.

Amazing for a "grainless" kit!
I brewed this kit in August '17 and had great results. I deviated slightly from the instructions by leaving the candi sugar out until fermentation appeared to have peaked (roughly day 3). By letting my yeast (a huge starter of Wyeast 1214 Belgian Abbey) work on the maltose for a few days before introducing the sucrose, I got this brew to ferment down nice and dry (my notes say 1.007 but I am still dialing in the correction factor of my refractometer) with just north of 9% ABV. I kept my fermentation temps right at 76 degrees F (the highest temp recommended by Wyeast for that strain). I love the esters thrown by that yeast. The final product is warming and taste very "european" like it should. Color ended up being a wonderful copper tone. This kit is a testament to the quality and variety of modern extracts! With 5 months or so in the bottle it is only getting better. I'm going to nurse this one and try to make it last a year or better and just savor its evolution. CHEERS.

Outstanding !
I have to say that after getting into brewing again after a 20+ year hiatus I'm amazed at how far homebrewing has come. When I racked this into the secondary after 14 days I had enough to put fill a 2L which I carbonated with a carbonator cap. 3 weeks after brewing and this is a really good Trippel. Fruity, sweet and finishes dry with a slight alcohol finish. I can't wait to see how it mellows with a little aging. I pitched at 70.F with WLP 530, the yeast was a few month old and I'd forgotten to make a starter. I repitched with a fresh starter of WLP 510 24 hours later. Ramped from 70.F to 75.F over 6 days. O.G. 1.076 F.G 1.011 ABV 8.8 %
I think after 2-3 months of finishing this will compete with the best commercial examples of the style. Doesn't hurt that it's about 1/2 of what I'd pay to buy this either.
