Description

  • Deep amber color with some added sweetness from the Dark Candi Syrup
  • Our Gluten Free recipes use Sorghum extract for the base fermentables
  • Includes Kent Goldings and Northern Brewer hops
  • Estimated ABV: 5.3%
  • Estimated IBUs: 23
  • Makes 5 gallons of finished beer

Our Amber Ale kit includes Dark Candi Syrup to add color. We recommend brewing this beer after you've tried using just sorghum and rice extract. Candi Syrup will add sweetness which helps mask the pepper like flavors from sorghum. We encourage you to experiment with our line of Candi Syrup.

Gluten-Free beers are a different world when it comes to finding a suitable replacement for the base extract. Celiacs are alleric to the hordein protein found in the base malts such as 2-Row and Pilsner malt. They are also allergic to the gliadin protein found in wheat which is the biggest offender of the two proteins. As a homebrewer your goal is to find a suitable fermentable that can emulate the maltiness in beer.

Our Gluten Free recipes use Sorghum extract for the base fermentables. Hops aggressively cut through the maltiness from sorghum easily. Hop additions in gluten free beers tend to be 40-50% less than normal.

All our gluten-free kits include dry yeast due to the small traces of the gliadin protein found in liquid yeast. (Although lab research has found the yeast metabolize the gliadin protein after fermentation and significantly reduce the ppm present.)

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.045-51
  • SRM (Color Range): 16.7
  • IBUs: 23.7
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 5.3%

Wife loves it.
I brewed this for my wife who recently went gluten free. I've brewed other gluten free kits for her but she ikes this one the most. She prefers it to any of the commercially available beers in our area.

I ordered a second kit that I'll make for her but I'll add more hops to it. I gave it 4 stars only because it needs more hops IMHO.

My Celiac Friend Loves IT
I brew this for a friend of mine that has celiac disease.

I add 1LB of candy sugar to the boil to kick it up a little.

I also flavor it for him using beer flavoring.

I have used: Peach, blackberry, apricot, & raspberry. Raspberry is his favorite and hides the sorghum flavor.

If you can't drink regular beer this works quite well.

Sorghum Grows on You
I'm no expert on GF beers but have had Sorghum based brews before. Compared to what you can find commercially (at least easily), this Amber Ale is similar enough, and after it sat in the bottle for a few months the metallic twang from the Sorghum became less and less noticeable (probably more from palate acclimation than it really diminishing). Its a good start if you have tried what is on the shelf and want to make your own. To go beyond Sorghum would likely require malting your own GF grains. Lots of info on this online, but way more work!

Final product was a little dry and metallic, with taste that grows on you.

First Try.
Ok so this was my first GF beer or any beer that I have used sorghum. I made this batch for a friend that is on a special diet. Of course I kept a few myself to give it a try. The beer was over carbonated and blew a few bottles, probably my fault. I used the corn sugar that comes with the kit and had 5.5 gallons. Although my final gravity was 1.014 which was a tad bit higher than I wanted which probably added to the over carbonation. The head built quickly with the added carbonation but dissipated almost as fast. More like a soda. It was still a bit sweet and had a slight vinegary taste. I did not like the beer much but am not sure it it was due to the sorghum or possibly contamination. Although my friend, who is (or was) an avid beer drinker enjoyed it, i found the slight vinagar taste off putting. Hops were lacking and had little aroma or flavor due to them. I will try this again and compare to see what the taste is hopefully figure out if it were contamination. I am usually very strict on my sterilization practices and never had a contaminated beer before and have about 15 batches under my belt. I will repost my second attempt on results. Three stars is pushing it for my taste but added the extra star for my gluten free friend.

Not a huge fan
I hesitate to give this only 3 stars as this is a sorghum beer so it is difficult to hold it to the standards of a regular beer. With that said, I do think this beer could double the hops and still be a bit under hopped. The distinctive strong sorghum flavor is very overpowering and needs some strong hop to balance. I will make this again but next time I'm considering bittering with warrior and substituting some of the sorghum with brown rice extract.

Not dissapointed
Turned out better than expected, although could have been hopped up a bit more. Unique flavor which caught me a little off guard at first, but very enjoyable. Smooth and easy to drink with a refreshing quality. I'd do it again.
