German for "old ale", Altbiers are a German version of Brown Ale. A malty beer with a firm bitterness. This beer can be further enhanced by cold aging for a month or two. It is rare to find a good commercial example of Altbier in the U.S. The malt extract for this kit is made entirely from Pilsner Malt, giving it that classic European flavor.

Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

After living in Germany for 3 years in the late 80s I have had several really nice Alt beers. So I am very hopeful and even sprung for the more expensive Dusseldorf Alt yeast to maximize my chances

My OG was 1.060. After 2.5 weeks the gravity is 1.026 Is that normal? Should I leave it longer or should I add something to get the FG lower?

BEST ANSWER: My batch started at 1.053 and bottomed out at 1.015 after 3 days. I left it at room temperature for another 3 days then moved it the garage to lager at 50 degrees for an additional 3 weeks. Turned out really nice. Good luck!

Great flavor
This kit has a great flavor, with a moderate hoppy finish. However the color came out quite a bit darker than expected.

very good
very good alt, sweet and malty, with some carmel and toffee at the end. Has a little too much grapefruit, might try either reducing the Perle hops and replacing with a Saaz or Northern. Otherwise true to the style (a personal favorite).
