Description

  • A18 is a clean American brewing yeast strain. An excellent choice for big, high alcohol, hoppy beers
  • Recommended for Barley Wine, Strong Ale, Robust Ports and Double IPAs
  • Double pitch size with a minimum of 200 billion cells—twice the size of the standard yeast pitch
  • Imperial Yeast is a group of hard-working, fermentation fanatics who provide the brewing industry with the highest quality, most effective yeast possible

A18 Joystick moves fast, but you can use this strain at the low end of the ale fermentation spectrum to keep things clean. A solid option for big, high alcohol, malty beers. It will also preform very well in a hoppy double IPA.

Attenuation: 71-75%
Flocculation: Medium
Alcohol Tolerance: 12% ABV
Optimum Fermentation Temp: 62-72°F
Cell Count: 200 Billion
Similar Strains: WY1764

Please Note: For best results we Always recommend ordering an Ice Pack with your liquid yeast. Ice Packs can be found below in the "You might Also Need" section.

Please Note: When choosing an ice pack option beware that the liquid yeast will not arrive cold even when shipped together. Ice packs and insulated mailing options are designed to keep the yeast colder for longer during shipment, but they will not ensure that your yeast arrives cold. We will not replace liquid yeast that arrives warm. During warmer months we strongly recommend you choose dry yeast.

This yeast is very active and gives a vigorous ferment. I made a starter and waited 24 hours till it was really going. Then I split it and stepped it up to pitch in two separate 10 gallon batches. First batch took off in about 4 hours. The second batch took off in about 8 hours. After 4 days the kreusen is already dropping so I think the primary is just about done. Can’t wait to taste the finished beers!!

Not good
I am very disappointed with this yeast.

While it works fast and seems to clean up pretty well (e.g., no perceptible diacetyl and decent clarity), the flavor just isn’t enjoyable - almost a strange sweetness that I do not get from other yeasts. Additionally, hop aromas are lacking.

Perhaps it’s fine for really big beers, but it doesn’t yield good results for 6%-7% ABV ales.

Imperial has some great strains, but this one isn’t one of them.

Quality control issues, not the same or as good as last years.
Last year it was better, this year (2018/19) it has changed and not for the better. Its less flocculant and stays in suspension much longer, and poor dry hop interaction (pulls out less aroma and flavors). I stepped up 2 packs using 3 liters of 1.040 fresh wort oxygenated and placed on a stir plate for 3 days.
I would not recommend it this yeast, I like the strain a lot, just not from Imperial!

Did the job
It’s ok. Used this in a 8% alcohol beer had trouble finishing the batch. The beer is good from the sample tube, a little sweeter than intended.

I bought two pouches. The second I’m going to try in a lower abv beer. See how that goes.

Joystick power
This yeast is excellent in pale ale beers especially when blended with hops and fruit!
