Description

We developed this product to relieve pressure when we transferred or filtered beer from one keg to another. This connects to the keg you are filtering into and has adjustable relief valve for letting pressure off as the keg fills up.

Notes: The very end of the pressure relief valve can be adjusted by unscrewing to adjust the pressure. If tight, and not adjustable by hand, it needs to be loosened with pliers. Wrap a towel around the end piece of the pressure relief valve (about  the last 1/4 in) and loosen with pliers. Then finger tighten or loosen to desired pressure.

I have been regularly filtering into a 2 1/2-gallon keg from a 5-gallon batch to split the brew with my friend in our collaborative brews.

This is the only decently rated adjustable pressure relief valve. We'll see how it performs.

What is the thread size? I have this and want to add a gauge. Thanks!
Whit Kauffman on Feb 25, 2022
BEST ANSWER: The thread size of the PRV is 1/4" NPT. The thread size where it attached to the gas disconnect piece is 1/4" Flare thread.

Performs as expected.
This PRV performs as expected. I uses these for spunding valves on the new 27L unitanks now available. I also use them on my souring barrels (corny kegs with oak chips) to prevent over-pressuring.

I disassemble the spring and valve diaphragm to apply a small amount of keg lube which makes the crack (opening) pressure more reproducible due to less sticking. The standard 1/4" NTP fittings are solid and allow for inserting t-connectors, hose barbs and even pressure gauges. It's very versatile.

Starting to experiment
Experimenting with different fermentation techniques. I ferment in a keg with the dip tube cut 2" short - 4.5 gallon in FV and 4.2 gallons out. Did a Special Bitter - let ferment for 3 days with blowoff then put on the valve set to 13psi. Let it rip for another 4 days, transferred to serving keg, carbonated and drank it on day 8. Beer was great. Trying a lager at room temp next week under 13 psi for 7 days.

Valve doesn't have a gauge but it was easy to adjust to 13psi using the CO2 tank gauge.

Faulty Gas Ball Lock Valve
The Ball Lock Valve that came with this item seems faulty. It was leaking air even with the relief valve closed. I tightened it etc., but still nothing, so I replaced it with one of my old ones and boom no more issues.

Does what it says. If you can, spend the extra $ for the gauge model!
This does what it says. I wanted the model with the gauge but it was out of stock and I was impatient. Quick tip to set pressure without the gauge: Close the valve. Set your regulator to the pressure you want. Fill the keg/vessel to the psi you want. Then pop this thing on,, and slowly open valve until you hear the C02 escape. Not a precise method, but probably gets you within a few psi of where you want to be. Also, I am sure you cam build this cheaper (even with parts from MoreBeer) but again- I'm impatient.

OK but could be better
I have the deluxe version and the gauge is great. The pressure control is rough at best. Needle valve would work much better and I will add one to mine

Works, but adjustments are fairly crude
Having an adjustable pressure relief valve is great for closed environment CO2 transfers, and especially helpful for keg to keg transfers of carbonated beer. The adjustment to the pressure relief is fairly crude (tends to jump with little adjustments). A tighter tolerance for the threads would probably help. That said, it's better than not having one, and beats the hell out of the old process of pulling the pressure relief valve to stay all the way open, or burping it. I wish I would have opted for the more expensive one with the gauge. My only suggestion for improvement is a tighter tolerance on the threads for the adjustment for the pressure.
