Description

If you prefer to purchase your home brewing parts in complete packages with all of the tools required for assembly, you’ll love this assembly kit version of our popular Blichmann Therminator Chiller. This Blichmann Therminator Chiller Assembly package comes with everything you’ll need to chill your wort to the perfect temperature and to attach the chiller itself to the rest of your home brew setup.

This chiller features quick disconnects on both of the wort’s ins and outs, as well as a ball valve that will control the flow rate that comes out of the out portal. This also gives the brewer complete control, as the ball valve helps you to slow the flow rate, give the wort more contact time against the water and produce colder wort once the process is complete. If you’ve spent years using an immersion chiller, you’ll be amazed at the difference that the Blichmann Therminator Chiller will make in your home brew process.

I live in a warm climate and the water for an immersion chiller does not get cold enough to cool the wort to a minimum 75 degrees F.

Blichmann plate cooler
Best cooling method I have used. I have been brewing for 35 years and this has proven to be a stand out product for homebrewing. Very simple to use.

Not happy with the Therminator
Very unhappy with this product. I do all grain 10 gallon boils in stainless kettles. I use a B3 hop spider and muslin bag for my pellet hops. Even with that. this chiller clogs immediately and flow goes to practically zero.

I use a March pump after each use to pump star san through it both ways and flow goes back to normal. And when I sanitize before using it, I just hook it up to a bucket of star san and let gravity do the work. Flow is great using gravity.

As soon as I hook it up to the kettle and March pump, same thing. Dribbles of wort into the kettle. I even bought a hangover from Exchilerator and whirlpooled my wort for half and hour today before even hooking up the chiller.

Then I hooked up the chiller. Same results.

If I am doing something wrong, someone please tell me. Otherwise, I would not recommend this to anyone.

And yes, wort is going into the Wort In port.

This is an expensive chiller, but more efficient than my previous chiller.

Not as
This review is not for the Therminator itself, just the extra equipment included in this bundle which has been labeled the "complete package". The extra equipment includes (all stainless):

1/2" FPT ball valve
1/2" FPT coupler
A single set of 1/2" MPT quick disconnect fittings
Pre-applied teflon tape

If, like me, you are upgrading from an immersion chiller, you will need more equipment than is included to make this functional. At the very least, you will need an additional set of quick disconnects with the hose barb fittings. Assuming you already have extra hose, it would still be a good idea to use hose clamps.

On top of this, if you plan on back-flushing, you can use the back-flush assembly sold here, but it will render the quick disconnects completely pointless as the assembly screws directly on to the Therminator. Instead, you'll likely have to build your own assemblies (two total: one for wort in, one for out), which will require another set of quick disconnects with the barb fittings, as well as garden-hose to barb fittings.

All in all, I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed that this "complete package" still requires an additional $25 (without back-flush) to $60 (with back-flush) just to make it work.

THE way to go
All I can say is WOW!
After years of using an immersion chiller, I decided I wanted to improve my techniques, one of which was to chill my wort to fermenting temp asap. I read several reviews and settled on the Therminator, having several other Blichmann products and being satisfied with those. What a huge difference this made! My ground water is at 68F this time of year, and this chilled from boiling to 70 - 72F in one pass at 1.5 - 2 gpm. It took 3 - 4 minutes for a 6 gallon batch with this as opposed to 15 - 20 minutes with the immersion chiller. Not to mention the lower chance of contamination. Makes this the 3rd best beer equipment purchase I've ever made. (Next to my 50L Braumeister and Blichmann Fermenator, of course!)
Also shipped from the Pittsburgh warehouse, it arrived the next day with free shipping!!
Thanks MoreBeer!!!!

Hello, Tom! How are you doing? I'm thinking about getting a 50L Braumeister and a (couple of) Fermenator. Which Fermenator size did you get? The 14 gallons? Does a 50L batch fit in it OK? Thanks,
Leandro
