In 2011, the White House home brewed beer for the first time in, well, perhaps centuries! We were super excited when a MoreBeer! customer first submitted his freedom of information act request for the White House homebrew recipes. We were a little surprised, and we'll say it - let down - when we saw the actual recipes. One MoreBeer! staffer blurted out "Whoa...this seems like beer that Prince Harry should be brewing." English malt extract, English hops, and even an English yeast strain were used; so the only thing truly American was the honey! It seems that we were not the only beer lovers to pick up on this. So while we really, really love English beers as much as the next homebrewer, we think the White House Brewmasters should be using fresh ingredients from well...America.

Since we were tweaking the recipe towards this side of the pond, we decided we could also help educate the White House staff on their yeast selection. Yes dry yeast has gotten better but since it's for the White House and all, we think they can spring for liquid yeast...and is there any better choice for this recipe than Wyeast 1056 AMERICAN Ale or White Labs 001 California Ale?? Not really. In fact, just queue up the star spangled banner, turn on the football game, and throw some hot dogs on the grill because we are starting to feel pretty patriotic here.

So while we send this kit along with our friendly suggestions back to the White House, YOU can make the exact same beer at home. That way if you are in a diner somewhere on the campaign trail and the president pulls up you can whip out a bottle of the 'Honey Pale the White House Should Be Making' or the 'Honey Porter the White House Should Be Making' and enlighten the Top Dog, homebrewer style.

This American Honey Porter is composed of all American ingredients, including:

Crystal 40L, Black Patent, Chocolate Malt, and Ultralight Malt Extract
Chinook and Cascade Hops
California Wildflower Honey

This is an amazingly drinkable porter recipe which will have you coming back for more!  The classic porter character of roast and coffee is beautifully balanced by a pleasant bitterness and a slight nutty taste.  This is a beer which will be fantastic fresh, and even better if you can keep your hands off long enough to let it age!  The honey character is nearly buried under the porter character, but provides an interesting and refreshing spin on the classic porter!

Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

Might be best brown ale I've made
This seems to be a crowd favorite. Strong roasted malt flavor perfectly balanced but with no hop bitterness. Gave it 3 1/2 weeks to ferment & condition before bottling half & putting the rest in a mini-keg. Also not too high ABV, making it a smooth, drinkable ale.

A good, not great, honey porter
I've brewed this once. It was good enough that it was consumed at our usual speed, though I'll not brew this kit again. In comparison with another honey porter kit I brewed, It was too sweet and the "wild" honey flavor did not blend well with the profile of the other ingredients. I like the concept but will brew my own recipe, using lighter honey such as clover honey, and less of it. Wild honey from the lower elevations of California tends to have a strong resinous background taste because of the many sources of "nectar" such as tree sap, and honey-dew from aphids and scale insects. I will also change the grain bill with more, lighter crystal malts and less chocolate.

Very good ale
Brewed this some time ago but as I recall it was unexpectedly well-balanced; not as sweet as I was hoping for since it was fall and we expect, in this case, sweeter beer. I will brew this again though.

Great Recipe
The extract kit turned out fantastic, can't wait to try it all grain. I'm not much for porters either, but I will be brewing this again.

You can't go wrong with this one.
This turned out to be an AWESOME brew! It's got the porter taste, but not overpowering. Very tasty. The honey is very subtle and not overpowering at all. You cannot go wrong with this one.

Great Beer, Not Too Heavy, Not Too Sweet
I thought it would be a bit sweeter or heavier, but overall, a nice drinkable beer. As long as you aren't expecting anything too sweet, you'll be happy. Our friends all loved it!

Good solid porter, quick turnaround
Tis ought to be included in morebeer's starter kits. The blonde ale is OK but boring. People get into brewing to get better beer than that. A solid performer. Have ordered several kits. Aways conditioning this in my house.

My 2nd batch was just as good
WOW. What a great beer with a quick turn around. This was my second batch of this. I just tried a bottle after 4.5 weeks total from brew time and it is amazing. Ordering kit #3 so I don't run out, and so I can let a kit age properly before I drink it all up. Much better than Northern's Caribou Slobber which is no slouch to begin with.

Superb, economical porter
I just got on morebeer to order another one of these kits. I brewed this full boil on 1-19, pitched the Wyeast 1056, and bottled exactly 2 weeks later. First taste was 13 days after that, then I went on vacation for a week. Came back today (2-24) and this has improved even more. Amazing full taste which keeps getting better. Honey is almost noticeably absent. OG was 1.059 but for some reason final was a little off at 1.020 instead of projected 1.013. Still turned out fantastic and very drinkable. ABV calculates at 5.11% which is great because it's really hard to stop at 2 or 3. This is nicely bitter, almost coffee-ish, slightly nutty and VERY well balanced. Gives Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald a run for it's money. Going to do a side by side with a few of my favorite porters and repost results soon. If you like Ed Fitz you will love this. It's right in the same ballpark.

Came out great
I'm partial to the darker brews during the winter, but I had only made canned kits so far.
This was one of my first Morebeer kits, but it certainly was tasty. I'll really only know for sure after finishing up the next half dozen or so for comparison.
