Description

S-shaped airlocks are the "OG" airlocks for home beer and winemaking. They make it easy to spot fermentation activity, and have no loose peices to lose.

The advantage of this type of airlock is that they have a smaller chamber so you can more closely observe the CO2 rising and therefore the rate of fermentation. They are also handy when you are cooling a beer as there is less chance of sucking airlock water back into the fermentation. They cannot be cleaned manually if they get dirty during the ferment. That is why many homebrewers prefer 3-piece airlocks for the active portion of the ferment, when the krausen (foam) from fermentation might be pushed up into the airlock.

They are fun, old school still rules
I never get tired of watching the fermentation action with these airlocks. It's very satisfying watching, and listening to them burble away.

K.I.S.S. Principle
These "S" air traps are definitely following the tried and true KISS principle. First and foremost, they are simple, no multiple parts to get lost. They are fairy easy to clean, pop the plastic dust debris cap off, blast soapy water, then sanitizer, then rinse water. tilt back and forth till drained, Then replace the cap, fill to marks with water, twist into carboy stopper hole and you're done. Hint: Wet stem to aid in insertion. I've yet to have must foam so high as to blow out through this trap, so I can't comment on how the trap works in that situation. That aside, these fit the bill for me.

Easier to see bubbles than the 3-piece
So far, I like this airlock much better than the 3-piece one I had. It's probably harder to clean, but not sure that's an issue yet.

Nice bubbler
Always like to keep these looking like new. These fit neatly to the carboy plugs and work well.

S-shaped Airlock
These are good. The only thing I'd complain about is that they are not very strong and can break if you twist them whilst trying to get them out of the stopper.

Works perfectly, a bit brittle
Not a lot of options out there. These things work perfectly until they break. I’ve had a few snap with very little force, attempting to twist pull them out of a bung.

I’ll continue to buy these, but I wish there was a more solid solution

I only use S shaped airlocks
I put just enough water in to fill the bottom U in the airlock. That minimizes back pressure while still maintaining an air lock.
